iBall overtakes Samsung as #1 tablet vendor in India

iBall has overtaken Samsung as the #1 tablet vendor in India. Micromax and Apple are not part of top 5 tablet vendors in Q4 2014, said IDC.

India tablet market shipments rose 3.6 percent quarter-on-quarter to 0.96 million units in Q4.

In 2014, the Indian tablet market fell 15 percent to 3.5 million.

The tablet market share of iBall rose to 15.6 percent in Q4 2014 from 4.5 percent in Q4 2013. IDC said the growth of iBall, a surprise #1 tablet brand, was supported by low cost products targeted at consumers looking to own entry level form factors. The brand is expanding its retail presence as well as geographical reach.

Samsung has a tablet market share of 12.9 percent during the fourth quarter of 2014 against 17.9 percent in Q4 2013. IDC said local tablet vendors are posing tough competition to Samsung at retail counters.

The tablet share of Datawind was 9.6 percent. Its focus on consumer markets is gaining momentum.

Lenovo has 9.4 percent tablet market share in Q4 2014.

HP achieved 8.7 percent share in Indian tablet market in the fourth quarter.

In Q3 2014, tablet share of Samsung was 22.2 percent, Micromax 10.9 percent, iBall 10.6 percent, Datawind 8.2 percent and Apple 6.7 percent.

Growth drivers in 2014

“The market saw a correction post the introduction of BIS regulation in July 2013. Unbranded tablets were wiped off from the market thereby contracting the bubble of growth witnessed in 1H 2013 and hence resulting in year-on-year decline in growth,” said Tanvi Mann, market analyst, Client Devices IDC India.

7 inch tablets placed in less than $150 price band populate the market and will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. While Android still has majority of the pie, vendors are exploring the 8-9” windows tablets as well.

Forecast for 2015

In 2015, Indian tablet market will grow in single digits. IDC anticipates 2015 to kick start with large government and education projects feeding the commercial segment. The consumer space will continue to be led by the local brands and we may see re-entry of some of the older players in the top five vendor list.
