Sony Xperia Z Ultra hands on and first impressions

Priced at Rs 46,990, Sony Xperia Z Ultra has provided innovative features. But Sony Mobile did not give enough attention to camera.

Anand B,’s review correspondent, takes a look at the new smartphone in the Indian phone market.

The 6.4-inch smartphone was announced at the Mobile World Congress 2013 in February. India audience is getting the phone now. The industry does not know whether Sony Mobile has done major changes between today’s launch and February.

Xperia Z Ultra’s outstanding feature is the super responsive screen with handwriting recognition. The latest phone is meant for both business professionals and busy youth.

I used my hand, pencil, pen, etc. to write on the screen. It’s compatible with most of the objects. There was no hassle to delete the sentences and re-write. Interestingly, the screen recognized less beautiful handwriting as well.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra, a touch phone, can be a good alternative for people who are looking for a Qwerty phone to send 100s of SMS. Though it does not have a physical keyboard, the handwriting recognition will assist the user to send messages hassle free. I took notes during calls as well.

Sony Mobile says the keyboard makes it ideal for one-handed input and multi-tasking, with small apps to help you improve productivity so you don’t lose time browsing between windows.

The company is trying to emphasize on security features as well. It may not be the best feature for everyone in India. Sony says security architecture safeguards both corporate and personal data.

The new Xperia Z Ultra is waterproof. But there’s guarantee that Sony Mobile will pay you if there’s any damage due to water. So I will not advise you to dip Xperia Z Ultra in water and wait for the result. After all, you may have paid Rs 46,990 to buy the ultra-slim and beautiful phone.

I am not sure whether you want to see your favorite Capsicum in bright green color in the screen of your Xperia Z Ultra.

Thanks to full HD TRILUMINOS Display for mobile powered by Sony’s latest X-Reality, several objects will become brighter for you. This may not be a good option for people who like natural color. But gaming enthusiasts may love extra-ordinary color on the phone screen.

Sony’s BRAVIA TV expertise ensures natural color. But I did not find it in the phone.

Xperia Z Ultra features integrated Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 2.2 GHz quad-core CPUs. We experienced better speed when I tried to upload a video.

Phone lovers like slim phones. Xperia Z Ultra will score on this aspect. I think it’s built for guys and may not be girls. I am not bringing a gender issue here. The Xperia Z Ultra is available in black, white or purple color finishes. Purple is generally meant for girls.

It’s big but light. Beautifully crafted 6.5mm body and 212 grams weight ensure portability to users.

I liked the massive 3050 mAh battery that promises up to 16 hours talk time, 820 hours standby time, 120 hours music listening time and 7.5 hours video playback time. This is my first impression about the battery and I have not tested the battery of the phone.

8MP camera may not be attractive to a young person. If you are looking to use Xperia Z Ultra on your holiday trip, you need another camera / camera phone to travel with you. Sony could give it a 13MP camera.
