HTC Desire 816G review

HTC has extended its smartphone portfolio by launching HTC Desire 816G. HTC is aiming the new Desire 816G mainly at the mid-range buyers.

The handset is a low cost version of HTC Desire 816 but retains several key features of its predecessor.

The dual SIM smartphone is sleek and fits easily in user’s hand. It comes in bold colours, quality sound and a good camera.

  • Dual front facing speakers
  • Big 5.5 inch display
  • Good camera quality
  • Reasonably priced

  • Non removable battery
  • Power button placement
  • Gloss plastic
  • Low screen resolution

Look wise the HTC Desire 816G is exactly the same as Desire 816 but is lighter in weight. The front side has the same dual Boomsound speakers flanking the SLCD 2 display.

The power button is placed at the top corner of left edge similar to Desire 816, which complicates one hand usage.

The bezels round the screen are fairly large. The small HTC logo at the bottom and the front-facing camera is at the top left.

At the top there is a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microUSB port at the bottom.

Desire 816G is 156.6mm high, 78.74mm wide and 7.99mm thick. Good quality plastic is used for Desire 816G and the phone looks attractive.

The size of the display has also remained the same as the HTC Desire 816.

Desire 816G sports a 5.5 inch SLCD 2 display with 720 pixel resolution.

The company has used the same display panel as Desire 816, but it’s not a full HD display.

The resolution seems scanty on the large screen. The 720 pixel resolution is slightly low for a 5.5 inch display.

HTC Desire 816G runs on Android 4.4 KitKat OS. Although this device is not running the latest version of HTC Sense UI, it has HTC Sense 5 UI on the top.

The device also has the HTC Blinkfeed and quick function toggle bar. The touchpad is not as responsive as the Desire 816.

There are several features to ensure Smooth performance and better compatibility with the Mediatek chipset.

HTC has used the same 13 MP BSI Sensor F2.2 aperture unit in Desire 816G. It has a 28 mm lens capable of full HD video recording.

Desire 816G also has a 5MP front camera for selfies. The front camera is also capable of 1080p video recording.

The camera can click good pictures even in low light. Other features include video calling, auto focus and flash.

The HTC Desire 816G is powered by a 1.3GHz Quad Core processor paired with 1GB RAM.

The device has a internal storage capacity of 8GB and expandable memory up to 32GB via Micro SD card.

HTC has used the same 2600 mAh battery. Since MediaTek MT6582 is less power efficient than Snapdragon 400, so small difference in battery backup is expected.

Priced at Rs 18,990, the Desire 816G offers all the essential features that a smartphone user looks for.

The device makes slight compromises, but the user experience remains the same. The only difference is a low cost chipset with lesser RAM.

By adding 2k to desire 816G’s budget user can get a Desire 816 instead. Perhaps Desire 816G can emerge as a more attractive option if priced between 15k to 17k.
