LAVA becomes largest feature phone company and second largest overall in India

IDC estimates LAVA has become the largest feature phone company in the Quarter ending September 2014. It is now no. 2 company in the overall category in the Indian market.

According to Cybex Exim Solutions LAVA imported a total of 5.3 million feature phones which makes it no. 1 company in case of shipments as compared to other Indian handset manufactures including Karbonn with 4.6 million & Micromax at 5 million shipments.

The data also suggests that LAVA imported a total of 7.27 million handsets in India, 13% more than the 3rd largest player  in the second Quarter of 2014.

LAVA is investing approximately Rs 500 crore in a phased manner to set up its own manufacturing unit in India over the next couple of years. This is company’s move to grab hold of more market share in India.

Presently LAVA carries out R&D and product engineering at Bangalore (India) and Shenzen (China). The proposed plant will have a monthly capacity of approximately 5 million units.

The company also has partnership with Google and will be launching  Android One devices, designed & developed in house, in Q1 of next year.

LAVA’s total volume shipments were 7.27 million following Micromax’ 8.78 million units. LAVA overtook Karbonn to secure the second place.

Karbonn’s total shipments were 6.39 million while Intex and Spice shipped 3.5 million and 2.19 million units repectively.

LAVA’s total volume share is 25.8% whereas Micromax has 31.2% of the volume share. Karbonn with 22.7% is on third place while Intex and Spice are on fourth and fifth place with 12.5% and 7.8% volume share respectively.

Lava Iris X1 smartphone is currently contributing to 30 percent sales in Lava smartphone portfolio by volume.

Lava Iris X1 features the latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat, 1.2 GHz quad core Broadcom BCM23550 processor powered by 1GB RAM and 1800 mAh battery.

It sports a 4.5-inch FWVGA IPS (854 x 480 pixels) display. Its 8.9 mm thick and 138 grams in weight.

Iris X1 sports an 8 MP rear camera with LED flash and a 1.4 µm pixel BSI+ sensor. Rear camera supports full HD (1080p) video recording and playback.  It includes a 2.0-MP front-facing camera for video calling.
