iPhone maker Apple announced the release of iOS 12 for its phone and tablet customers.
The latest mobile operating system (OS) from Apple comes with a range of innovative features. The iOS 12 update aims to improve overall software performance on the iPhones, especially the older models like iPhone 6S.
Apple has offered the iOS 12 update to all the smartphones and tablets running on iOS 11. List of iOS 12 compatible iPhones include iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 5s. The new iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max run the latest iOS software out-of-the-box.
Compatible iPads include the 12.9-inch iPad Pro 2nd generation, 12.9-inch iPad Pro 1st generation, 10.5-inch iPad Pro, 9.7-inch iPad Pro, 9.6-inch iPad, iPad Air 2, iPad Air, iPad 5th generation, iPad mini 4, iPad mini 3, and iPad mini 2.
Apple iOS 12 features
Apple says the latest iOS 12 improves performance of older iPhone models. Apps on iOS 12-based iPhones open twice as fast. It has an optimised CPU. On older iPhones, apps open up to 40 percent faster than iOS 11. Apple says the camera app launches up to 70 percent faster while the keyboard appears on the screen up to 50 percent faster.
Apple has rolled out a new Memoji, a customisable version of Animoji. The company has rolled out new Animoji characters like T.rex, ghost, koala and tiger. There are new camera and text effects as well.
Apple’s voice-assistant Siri has received a few updates. The Siri has become faster. Apple is making its digital assistant more compatible with third-party applications and native applications.
Apple’s native photo application suggests searches to make it easier for users to discover older photos through keywords like business names, moments and places. Apple has rolled out RAW support for editing photos.
Apple has rolled out features focused on digital well-being. Apple iOS 12’s dashboard enables users to monitor how much time they spent on their device and different applications. Users can also personalise the time limit for time spent on different apps. The Do Not Disturb mode has an improved bedtime feature.
The latest ARKit 2.0 is more interactive and dynamic. For instance, users can interact with an AR content from separate devices. Apple has also rolled out a new Measure app. AR-based Measure app enables the user to get precise measurement of any object.
iOS 12 has additional security features to enhance the privacy and security of customers. In Safari, enhanced Intelligent Tracking Prevention helps block social media “Like” or “Share” buttons and comment widgets from tracking users without permission.
The new Safari presents simplified system information when users browse the web, making it more difficult for them to be tracked based on their system configuration. Safari automatically creates, autofills and stores strong passwords when users create new online accounts and flags reused passwords so users can change them.
Apple Books app makes discovering and enjoying books and audiobooks effortless. The Book Store tab that makes it fun to browse all that Apple Books has to offer. The Library tab to easily organize one’s full collection, and a dedicated Audiobooks tab.
Apple News has a new design to discover new channels and topics with a new sidebar on iPad and the Channels tab on iPhone.
Stocks section has a new design with a customizable watch-list. It also includes top business stories from Apple News and is available for the first time on iPad.
Voice Memos is now available on iPad and adds iCloud support to sync recordings and edits across devices.
Apple Music has over 50 million songs. You can see an updated artist page, search by lyrics, Friends Mix, and Top 100 charts, finding and discovering music is easier than ever.
Siri translation expands to more than 40 language pairs and brings more knowledge of sports, celebrities, food and nutrition. Siri can also surface favorite photos by person, place, event, time and topic, and more.
You can download the latest software by waiting for Over-the-Air (OTA) update on your phone. You can go to Settings > General > Software update. The phone will check for the update and notify you to download and install.
You can also download the software through iTunes. You need to connect your iPhone to the PC through the data cable and launch iTunes app on your computer. You can check for the update on the app. iTunes will automatically download and install the update on your phone.
