Lenovo has signed Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor as the brand ambassador for smartphones in India.
Ranbir will endorse Lenovo’s range of smartphones and will feature in various television and online commercials for the brand in India. Earlier he was endorsing both PCs and tablets, and in this partnership he will continue endorsing tablets as well.
Lenovo claims it is the fourth largest smartphone vendor in the world with 4.8 percent share, growing shipments 47 percent year-over-year. After buying Motorola Mobility, Lenovo becomes a strong number three smartphone maker.
Globally Lenovo tablet shipments grew 326 percent year-over-year to 3.4 million units in the third fiscal quarter of 2013-14. The growth was primarily driven by the launch of Lenovo Yoga Tablet and Miix2 8-inch tablet.
Lenovo’s combined shipments of smartphones and tablets – 17.3 million devices – surpassed the 15.3 million PCs it sold. Lenovo’s Mobile Internet and Digital Home (MIDH) products revenue — including smartphones and tablets – rose 73 percent to $1.7 billion.
Smartphones and tablets together contributed 16 percent revenue to Lenovo, the company said.
However, Lenovo tablets face tough competition from companies like Samsung, Apple, Asus, and HP in India. Recently HP launched HP Slate tablet series by signing Deepika Padukone as its brand ambassador.
Lenovo is yet to reach to the top in smartphone market share in India. Samsung maintained its leadership in smartphone market in India with a 38 percent share, followed by Micromax (16 percent), Karbonn (10 percent), Sony (5 percent) and Lava (4.7 percent) in Q4 2013, according to IDC.
