Galaxy S3, Note II, S4 mini, Mega 5.8, S4 zoom to get Galaxy Gear smartwatch compatibility

Samsung on Thursday said it would expand its Galaxy Gear smartwatch compatibility to six Samsung Galaxy smartphones in India through a software update.

Through the software update, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note II, Galaxy S4 mini, Galaxy Mega 5.8 and Galaxy S4 zoom will be compatible to use with Galaxy Gear smart watch.

Interestingly, Galaxy Gear can not be used with smartphones from rival companies such as Nokia, LG, Sony, BlackBerry, Micromax, Karbonn, Lava, Apple, etc. This has reduced the scope of opportunities to grow.

The schedule for software update will vary for each device, Samsung said in a statement. Galaxy Gear compatibility software is already available for Galaxy S4 users and other smartphones will get separate software updates in November.

Priced at Rs 22,990, Samsung Galaxy Gear in India is facing a low uptake, according to trade community. But there is no official word from Samsung India. The decision to offer Galaxy Gear smartwatch compatibility software is aimed at enhancing the scope of the use among Samsung fans.

Samsung Galaxy Gear is promoted aggressively in India. But the cost, limited use, premium status, lack of compatibility with rivals and other Samsung devices are pulling it down.
