Apple is facing a significantly slow start to sell its recently launched iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones in India.
Mobile industry analysts who tracked the launch of iPhone 5s says the sales could pick up during the Diwali week. Though there were relatively small queues in New Delhi on 16 October midnight to pick up their beloved smartphones, the demand is not encouraging at present.
Also, the small demand is for Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. This could be because of the latest controversies involving bending issue with the largest smartphone from Apple. In any case, India is not a major market for Apple iPhones. On the other hand, Apple is generating significant demand in China.
During the day time, GizmoLead.com journalists, who tracked a couple of Apple phone shops, could not see significant crowd for picking up Apple devices. Mobile retail shops say that the demand will pick up on Saturday and Sunday. Plus, both iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are available online channels as well.
It is the first time that California-based Apple is making the iPhone available at midnight in India, in line with the practice it follows elsewhere.
On 16 October, Apple premium retailers and authorized dealers delivered phones to customers who had pre-ordered them by making partial payments.
India Today reported that Apple has shipped 50,000 to 55,000 units of its new iPhones to India in the first phase. The device vendor has received 21,000 pre-orders as of Tuesday.
Considering that many Apple devices still carry the perception of a premium product, the high price of iPhone 6 is not a distraction for Indians. However, many of the Apple smartphones are used by the elite class in India, the second largest mobile service market after China. India has a mobile user base of around 900 million.
Apple is offering the 16GB version of Apple iPhone 6 Rs 53,500, 64GB version at Rs 62,500 and the 128GB version at Rs 71,500.
The price of the 16GB model of Apple iPhone 6 Plus is Rs 62,500 and 64GB version is Rs 71,500, while 128GB version is priced at Rs 80,500.
Apple distribution partners for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are Ingram Micro, Redington, Rashi Peripherals and Reliance.
