Apple, Huawei Watches make choice difficult

Huawei and Apple are out with their feature-packed wearable smart devices Huawei Watch and Apple Watch respectively.

Huawei Watch was launched about a week back and Apple Watch was launched officially on March 9, although it will take a while to ship to India.

Gizmolead has taken a look at both models. Here’s our first impression of the devices:

Apple Watch comes in two sizes. There is the 1.5 inch (38 mm) version for women and 1.7-inch (42 mm) one for the others. The displays produce resolutions of 272×340 ppi and 319×390 ppi respectively. The watch has retina touchscreen display with Force Touch, and sapphire glass or Ion-X glass cover depending on model. With its rectangular dial, the mobile comes in three collections — Apple Watch Sport, Apple Watch and Apple Watch Edition.

Huawei Watch, in turn, looks traditional but premium with its circular, 1.4-inch, scratch- and water-proof AMOLED display. With touch-sensitive sapphire crystal lens and 400 x 400, 286 pixels per inch image that offers 10,000:1 high contrast ratio, the device works with gloved or wet hands. It, too, comes in three collections — Classic, Business and Sport.

Internally, Huawei Watch features the Android Wear OS. It is powered by a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm APQ8026 processor paired with 512MB RAM.

Apple Watch has an S1 processor and runs iOS8.

In terms of features offered, Huawei Watch offers a range of health tracking functions, including a heart rate monitor sensor and 6-Axis sensor (it enables the watch to identify a user’s state of motion and measure sports data). The phone also has a barometer sensor, touch motor, and built-in microphone.

Apple Watch, in turn, allows communication options including sending and receiving messages, answering calls. It has the option called Digital Touch which allows users to send heart rate information as an SMS.

Huawei Watch can be paired with smartphones that run on Android 4.3 or updated versions and enables users to receive SMS, e-mail, calendar, app, and phone call notifications.

But Apple Watch pairs only with iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus running the latest version of iOS 8. The smartwatch also offers the options of Bluetooth 4.0 support, Wi-Fi and 8GB built-in storage.

In terms of apps, Apple Watch has a Workout app which allows user to keep track of their workout sessions. The Fitness app, which complements Workout app and collects activity data of users, displays activity data in greater detail.

Among its other features, Apple Watch sports an accelerometer and GPS and MagSafe technology with inductive charging for a quick connection. In its Edition collection, Apple Watch has used custom rose or yellow 18-karat gold alloys developed to be twice as hard as standard gold, and offers uniquely designed straps and bands with 18-karat gold clasps, buckles or pins.

Huawei Watch has a Gyroscope and Accelerometer, PPG, Barometer, Vibration Motor and 4GB internal storage. It comes with a 300mAh battery. Apple claims the battery will offer 18-hour continuous talk time. The company has been struggling to boost life of batteries used with its products.
