Surface 3: a better version of Surface 2 tablet from Microsoft

Microsoft has announced the launch of Surface 3, the next addition to the Surface tablet family starting for $499 which will run on Windows 8.1.

Surface 3 tablet is thinner and lighter than its earlier version Surface 2. Surface 3 is 8.7 mm thin and weighs 1.37 pounds or 622 grams, while Surface 2 weighs 675.9 grams.

The Surface 2 and Surface 3 screen sizes is almost similar. Surface 3 has a 10.8 inch screen whereas Surface 2 has a 10.6 inch screen. Surface 3 has 3:2 aspect ratio.

The newly launched Surface 3 has 3.5MP front facing camera and 8MP rear facing camera with auto focus and both can capture 1080p video, while Surface 2 has 5MP main shooter and 3.5MP front facing camera.

Both Surface 3 and Surface 2 promise similar battery life and offer up to 10 hours.

The Surface 3 charges using microUSB, which no other Surface offers till date. It means the new tablet can use the same connector as most mobile phones but charges slowly than the 13 watt power supply that Microsoft provides with the tablet.

The Surface 3 tablet comes with a one year free subscription to Office 365 including full versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote as well as 1TB of OneDrive storage.

The users will also have Type Cover which gives better typing experience and turns the tablet into a full laptop. Both Surface 2 and Surface 3 include Type Cover.

The new device has an integrated kickstand with three preset positions on the contrary Surface 2 provides dual kickstand.

The other benefit of Surface 3 over Surface 2 is it can be a full Windows workstation. It can be a laptop, a desktop PC in conjunction with Docking Station.

The new tablet also includes full size USB 3.0 port, a Mini DisplayPort and a microSD card reader.

Surface 3 is powered by Quad core Intel Atom x7 processor and is combination of burst mode and advanced power management. The Surface 2 on the other hand has a quad-core processor, ARM based NVIDIA Tegra 4.

Surface 3 offer users to work in Office, writing, using the internet, games and entertainment whereas users which work on editing and rendering video or complex 3D modeling can choose Surface Pro 3.

The other feature which attracts the user to switch to Surface 3 is it supports pen experience, including 256 levels of pressure sensitivity for accuracy and detail.

Customer of Surface 3 will have to pay extra cost for the Surface Pen which will be available in silver, blue, red and black color.

Like the Surface 2, the Surface 3 will eventually be available in cellular form with LTE data support.

Microsoft is taking pre orders and Surface 3 will be available in 26 markets by May 7.
