LG G2 review: features and specifications do not match price

Korean consumer electronics major LG Electronics is known for innovation in the mobile market. LG G2 is a major disappointment since several rival phones are available with better features and specifications at affordable price.

But LG G2 lacks enough appeal to smartphone users. Even its design may not be appealing enough to mobile users comparing with some of the innovative designs of LG’s rivals which have been selling like hot cakes.

I am not referring to Samsung, which is reported to cheating smartphone users by sharing wrong bench marking reports. There are other phones in the smartphone market with better looking designs. One may be unhappy about Samsung Galaxy looks. At least, there are no reports about LG cheating in bench marking reports.

Even with G2 smartphone, which is available in India for a price tag of around Rs 38,804 for the 16GB version and Rs 42,456 for 32GB model, LG is trying to package several features that can come in a smartphone. But its price does not match its innovative features.

GizmoLead.com’ Baburajan K, who accessed the phone recently, takes a look at the latest smartphone from LG.

LG G2 may compete with Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One and BlackBerry Z10 in terms of features. But LG G2 will not be ranked in the top position if one considers price of the latest smartphone. The price does not match G2’s features.

Korean consumer electronics major – when it announced G2 last month globally – focused on camera features and back button and gave a special premium look to introduce the phone.

LG G2 cannot be compared with Apple iPhone 5 and Sony Xperia Z phones. These two phones have much better look and specifications and user friendly interface thanks to focus on innovation.

The first problem with LG G2 is the overheating. Users say it is a common problem with premium smartphones. But we have seen several phones that do not create excess heat when you are on a video game or chat.

The second hurdle is the lack of speed when you do multi-tasking. Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor may not be inadequate to game enthusiasts. One will find slow speed when you move from app to another.

For instance, video uploading to YouTube or sharing with your social media network takes time after clicking your favourite video or picture. One can blame their telecom operator and poor Internet access for slow speed. But if the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor does not take off, you will become sick.

I thought of writing to LG directly when they introduced G2 with back button last month. Does the breakthrough (LG would like us to term back button as break through) back button really effective?

The entire industry and billions of mobile phone users never complained about the side buttons. But LG realized that back button is the only solution to all problems associated with smartphones.

I tried to use back button during LG’s demo and later. I am finding it difficult when I use the phone in the left hand. I am a professional. I use smartphones in my left hand and do other work even when I am on the phone. I call this as multi-tasking. LG G2 phone with back button is not suitable for multi tasking. I also speak to people keeping the phone on a space between my shoulder and ear. I do not use index figure for operating smartphones.

I am sure our readers will take time to operate LG G2. LG G2 smartphone has three small hardware keys at the back (right below the camera lens). One needs to be careful when they select LG G2. Back button should not deter their decision.

LG says its display size is optimized for showing more things on the screen. Has LG G2 lost its appeal because of this optimization? Other smartphones from LG were better looking.

The 5.2-inch LG G2 and the 5-inch Samsung Galaxy S4 have similar curved edges, plastic body and shimmering pattern on the back.

Mobile phone users will not complain about its size. The phone is easy to hold and doesn’t seem too big in the hand.

We liked the display. Pictures have got better clarity. LG G2’s 5.2 inch Full HD IPS display ensures superior graphics, accurate colors and clear images without any distortion.

For more efficient energy usage, the LG G2 employs Graphic RAM (GRAM) technology which reduces the display’s energy use by up to 26 percent on a still frame and increases overall usage time on the device by approximately 10 percent.

To offer an expansive viewing experience, LG’s innovative Dual Routing technology reduces the phone’s bezel to a mere 2.65mm on the side edge which makes the maximum viewability of the large 5.2-inch in compact and slim design. Users will experience better viewing experience.

Do we need KnockOn feature on LG G2? LG G2 smartphones can be powered on using the double tap trick — tapping twice on the display.

One will not complain about 3000 mAh battery. We need such massive battery to power our usual office work or 3G networks.

The latest smartphone runs on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean). LG failed to bring the smartphone with the new version of Android.

LG says G2 comes with a number of compelling user experience (UX) features that provide the most practical value by focusing on a smartphones most popular task. If the G2 is lying on a surface face-up, its KnockOn feature helps the smartphone to be powered on by simply tapping twice on the display. The Guest Mode feature protects privacy as it sets two pattern locks. It allows the owner to set up a sort of guest interface for people who want to experience the phone. The user experience can be improved if there is more speed.

Using Guest Mode, the owner can secure important files and deny access to certain applications. The Text Link feature allows information embedded in text messages to be selected and easily saved in a memo or calendar and searched on a map or the internet, LG says.

QuickRemote app transforms G2 into a universal remote to control popular home entertainment devices and operate multiple devices. Slide Aside enables easier multitasking by simply sliding open apps off to the side using a three-finger swipe.

LG G2 is said to be the first smartphone on the market today to feature 24 bit/192kHz Hi-Fi playback that reproduces studio-like quality sound. Consumers can now experience a level of audio realism that was not possible before in a smartphone. But one needs to be inside locked room to enjoy this kind of sound quality. Since one experience poor network, we are forced to run towards a window or door to attend a call.

We cannot say that LG G2 has innovative camera features. It is usual with several phone makers. 13MP camera comes equipped with Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) technology to prevent blurring. This also allows to take pictures of objects in motion as clear as they were still. G2 allows dual-recording with its 13MP back and 2.1MP front camera. Good for usual outing. These are not excellent camera capabilities. One should not look for G2 if they need a good camera. Look for a camera itself.

Snapdragon 800 is one of the fastest mobile processors around aside from the A7 chipset. I’m not sure where you are coming from and bashing LG G2 on most of yoir comments but it would be gokd if you research more abkut the mobile industry before writing an article.

I’m a G2 user and yes I love the Knockon feature. The power and volume controls are nice too as the buttons does not get in the way of your hands. Its also good for 3rd party protective cases as they don’t have to allot extra holes on the sides and can actually contour the case to be slimmer.

There is also no lag on the G2 wheb swiping and the OS is very stable (unlike Samsung).

I’ve been using this phone for 2 weeks and have yet to find anything to complain about.
