Devices vendor Apple does not need an introduction. iPhone 5s also requires no special welcome in India because it already assisted the smartphone maker to remain afloat.
My review is based on the access of the iPhone 5s smartphone for a limited period.
Indian mobile phone users always believe that Apple will continue to bring high quality smart devices because Apple is known as a premium smartphone supplier. There are two things that supported this belief. First, Apple introduces innovative and high quality products. Second, Apple products come at a price, which is not affordable to majority Indians.
iPhone 5s has broken the strong belief of Indians in a brand which is known for high end smartphones and tablets.
There are several reasons. A new operating system should not be the upper selling proposition of a smartphone maker that brings less than 3-4 phones in a year. Google and LG tried this same mistake when they introduced Nexus 5 to ride on the anticipated popularity of Android KitKat 4.4 operating system.
In the case of Apple, the new iOS is already available with other device – Apple iPhone 5c — as well. But Apple is in much better position than Google Android because the latter’s OS is widely available among its competitors. Most of the Android phones are becoming boxes with select items. There is a different view to this.
However, users welcomed the sudden jump from iOS 6 to iOS 7 that came with additional security features.
One handset reviewer said the iPhone 5s puts much more focus on ease of use and simple choices than an Android handset such as the Samsung Galaxy S4. Where Android opens up a world of choice in settings, layouts, launchers, and options, the iPhone 5s provides a standard platform for everyone using the handset.
What’s new with iPhone 5s
I do not want to disappoint Apple fans by saying a big no. There are good things as well. But there are no elements, which can be considered as new, with iPhone 5s (excluding the OS). Media and analysts have already said 64bit is not a newsworthy element. Nobody liked the fact that iPhone 5s looks like the iPhone 5 with a few cosmetic changes.
Mobile phone industry watchers admitted that Apple dared to introduce a new phone without even changing the look.
For some users, iPhone 5s is still the best looking smartphone in the world. By admitting this, they need to forget about the availability of devices from Nokia, BlackBerry, Sony, LG, Samsung, etc. But I always felt that vendors compromise on several aspects before they launch their new product. 5s is not free from this.
There are enough reasons not to accept Apple iPhone 5c as the best smartphone in the world at present.
Some users may like the precision cut aluminium rear sits absolutely flush with glass panels that sit at the top and bottom. Apple continues to offer neat edges that are perfectly formed and the 7.3mm thick phone feels comfortable in the hand. 112g weight ensures that phone users do not need extra support to handle the phone. My point is that these are not new. Apple has always maintained these qualities.
iPhone 5s, which faced shortage in India due to non-availability of stock, is not the best all-round smartphone on the market right now. Indian telecom operators Reliance Communications and Bharti Airtel complained and raised the issue with Apple’s higher authorities. The main fact that the Indian mobile users do not still know is whether the shortage started selling hundreds of iPhones or million units.
When Apple announced iPhone 5s, saying it will be the most forward thinking iPhone, everyone thought it will be truly revolutionary.
The device maker could have revolutionized by improving on the design, material quality, screen size, etc.
Forward thinking did not mean anything. 64-bit desktop-class architecture is new to the world. Samsung later said it will have a smartphone with 64-bit desktop-class architecture later. Otherwise, there were no other promises.
Apple says Touch ID, an innovative way to simply and securely unlock your phone with the touch of a finger is available with iPhone 5s only. Finger sense could have been revolutionary. But competition has already started working on this concept as well.
Touch ID can be programmed to recognise up to five fingers (they can be just yours or yours and trusted other people). All you have to do is hold your finger to the sensor repeatedly, while the iPhone 5S builds up an image of what your print looks like. You’re prompted to move your finger around, to get full coverage, and even to use the side of your finger so that you can use Touch ID from pretty much any angle. With that done, you’re ready to go.
iPhone 5s redefines the best smartphone experience, the company said during the launch. But I am unable to change my perception about iPhone 5s. Apple’s previous models were much better than this.
Qualcomm is bringing out chips in most of the quarters. So what’s the big deal about Apple’s A7 chip?
8 megapixel iSight camera with True Tone flash is available for the first time with iPhone 5s.
New features include Control Center, Notification Center, improved Multitasking, AirDrop, enhanced Photos, Safari, Siri and iTunes Radio.
iPhone 5s is available in three gorgeous metallic finishes including gold, silver and space gray. The white model is the same as last year’s, but there’s also two new colours. Space Gray replaces the ‘black’ model of last year and is subtly different, with the case a purer grey than last year’s blue-grey model.
The A7 chip in iPhone 5s offers up to twice the CPU and graphics performance.
Apple improved battery performance by including M7 motion coprocessor that gathers data from the accelerometer, gyroscope and compass to offload work from the A7 for improved power efficiency.
Apple says the Touch ID sensor recognizes the touch of a finger so the sensor is only activated when needed, preserving battery life. All fingerprint information is encrypted and stored securely in the Secure Enclave inside the A7 chip on the iPhone 5s; it’s never stored on Apple servers or backed up to iCloud. Touch ID can also be used as a secure way to approve purchases from the iTunes Store, App Store or iBooks Store.
iPhone 5s’ 8 megapixel iSight camera features f/2.2 aperture and a larger sensor with 1.5μ pixels for better sensitivity and low-light performance, resulting in better pictures.
These improvements, along with the Apple-designed image signal processor in the A7 chip and the new Camera app in iOS 7, provide up to two-times faster auto-focus, faster photo capture, automatic image and video stabilization, and better dynamic range.
iPhone 5s True Tone flash, in a world first, adjusts color and intensity for over 1,000 combinations, so photos taken with a flash appear more natural. iPhone 5s also includes a new Burst Mode, Slo-Mo video with 120 fps, a new FaceTime HD camera for better low-light performance and audio-only FaceTime calls with iOS 7.
iPhone 5s features a remarkable thin and light, precision-crafted design that customers around the world love, including an anodized aluminum body with diamond cut chamfered edges, a stunning 4-inch Retina display and glass inlays. iPhone 5s is available in three gorgeous metallic finishes including gold, silver and space gray. To complement iPhone 5s, Apple designed premium leather cases in six rich colors—beige, black, blue, brown, yellow and (RED)—with soft, color-matched microfiber lining.
