Obi Mobiles launched in India, targets mid-range smartphone market

Obi Mobiles, the mobile brand of Inflexionpoint, has announced their launch in India to target the mid-range smartphone market.

John Sculley, co-founder and former Apple CEO, launched the company’s operation in India.

The company will be led by Ajay Sharma who is appointed as Obi Mobiles CEO. Sharma was previously associated with Micromax and HTC as their smartphone division head.

Obi Mobiles will launch their first mobile handset series in India by early May 2014, company sources said.

The company plans to invest $20 million in India to focus on supply chain, design center innovations and sales/after sales activities in key locations across India.

On the occasion of launch, Sculley said the emergence of the knowledge economy in India has created a large services sector in India. This gives a huge opportunity for a company like Obi Mobile that targets the middle class customers.

Sculley added that due to delay in implementation of 3G services and high smartphone prices, the smartphone share in India is only 20 percent, leaving larger part of the ground with opportunities yet to be tapped. “The scenario hence becomes a favorable and attractive chance for us to launch Obi Mobiles and offer the best of the smartphone with an apt pricing model.”

As part of its strategy to offer affordable smartphones featuring advanced technology in India, Obi Mobiles has appointed Dragon Technology and Iris Computers, the two subsidiaries of Inflexionpoint, to provide design and testing, and distribution facilities to Obi Mobiles.

In the near future, Obi Mobile has plans to take the brand to more markets in Asia Pacific, Middle East and Latin America after the Indian market.
