Nokia Asha platform will offer free WhatsApp and Nokia Asha 501 will be the first phone to come with the instant messaging service, the device major said on Thursday.
Nokia Asha 501 users can download the IM application through a software update from 21 November.
The smartphone vendor is targeting social media fans — especially Facebook — to book Nokia Asha 501, one of the cost effective phones from Nokia. Recently eMarketer said India will have the world’s largest Facebook population by 2016, overtaking the U.S. India, with the highest growth in 2013, will increase user numbers by 37.4 percent. while Indonesia’s numbers will increase 28.7 percent and Mexico will grow its social network user base by 21.1 percent.
The Finnish device major, which will be acquired by Microsoft, says the new software comes with a single swipe camera, single touch share to Facebook and ability to track Facebook comments and likes from your Fastlane screen.
The updated software with WhatsApp will come pre-installed in all new Nokia Asha 501 handsets, set to hit stores on December 5, 2013. Existing users can update the software through an over-the-air update.
WhatsApp currently has over 350 million monthly active users. About 250,000 users per day are registering for WhatsApp using Nokia devices, including Nokia Asha and Lumia handsets.
