Apple may launch big iPhone in May

Devices vendor Apple may be gearing up to launch its big screen iPhone and iPad in May 2014, giving tough competition to Samsung.

At present, Samsung is the king of large screen smartphones. Samsung has provoked Sony, HTC, Nokia, LG, etc. to launch phablets across the world.

Media reports suggest that the big-screen Apple iPhone will have a 20nm chipset made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

In addition, Apple is likely to unveil new iPad with display sizes measuring 12.9-inch or 13.3-inch in October. Earlier, media reported that Apple will launch a 12.9-inch iPad Pro with 4K resolution in October.

The new development shows a major departure from Apple devices’ current size.

Apple iPhone 5s has height of 123.8 mm (4.87 inch), width of 58.6 mm (2.31 inch), depth of 7.6 mm (0.30 inch) and weight of 112 grams.

On the other hand, Apple iPhone 5c has height of 4.90 inches (124.4 mm), width of 2.33 inches (59.2 mm), depth of 0.35 inch (8.97 mm) and weight of 132 grams.

Apple iPhone 5s and 5c come with 4-inch Retina Display, while iPad Air tablet has a 9.7-inch Retina display and iPad mini features 7.9-inch Retina display.

Apple is working with Taiwan’s Quanta Computer to manufacture the new big tablet. The large-screen iPad will replace the 11-inch Macbook Air.

The industry is expecting that Samsung will announce new models for 2014. Samsung is planning its next media conference in Bali to announce its new line up of smartphones and tablets.

iPhone may come with larger screen size

The May launch plan reflects Apple CEO’s mail to his team members.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, in a recent mail to its employees, said: “We have a lot to look forward to in 2014, including some big plans that we think customers are going to love. I am extremely proud to stand alongside you as we put innovation to work serving humankind’s deepest values and highest aspirations. I consider myself the luckiest person in the world for the opportunity to work at this amazing company with all of you.”

In 2013, Apple introduced iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iOS 7, free OS X Mavericks, iPad Air and the iPad mini with Retina display.

It faced severe criticism for “budget smartphone iPhone 5c” for its cost.

Apple began shipping the Mac Pro from a manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas. It also marked its 50 billionth download on the App Store.
